James and I are not really dating but we are kinda going out and we are both okay with that. I think we have a mutual understanding. But I'd like to know what is that?

A mutual understanding is an agreement between two people in which they both understand and accept the situation they are in. In this case, you and James both understand that we are not officially dating, but you are still seeing each other romantically. You are both okay with this arrangement and have likely discussed it openly with each other. This mutual understanding is what allows you both to continue seeing each other without putting a title on your relationship.
